About this work
When an established, specialized French Low-Tech magazine approached me to design their cover, they were looking for more than just a slick aesthetic. The editorial team had discovered an earlier piece of mine depicting a traditional Potlatch ceremony (a communal gift-giving festival) within a rural setting. That specific atmosphere centered on community resilience, mutual aid, and ecological harmony perfectly mirrored their core publishing values.
For this artwork, I redesigned the original composition by intentionally adding practical, low-tech engineering solutions to the landscape.

01. Collective Resilience: Communities Thrive
We have abandoned the archaic view of society as a hyper-individualistic battlefield where citizens act as competitors fighting for their own survival and fortune and we returned to a collective spirit.
To visualize this "new ancient" lifestyle, I chose the archetype of a communal meal. People gather to cook, share resources, and deeply connect. This scene captures the profound security of being part of a larger group that is structurally capable of facing any systemic challenge together. It is a visual antidote to the isolation of our current era.
02. Decentralized Energy: Solar & Electric Symbiosis
While solar photovoltaic panels and energy distribution networks border on high-tech, they are deeply aligned with low-tech philosophy when decentralized. Sunlight is a democratic resource, and harvesting it efficiently is central to any sustainable energy package.
The infrastructure in this scene highlights this practical integration: in the foreground, a Lytefire solar concentrator oven is used to bake communal bread, while in the background, residents arrive in a Vhélio, a solar-assisted, pedal-powered electric vehicle. Human muscle and solar energy become the primary drivers of transport and daily utility.
03. Circular Infrastructure: Practical Low-Tech Solutions
The scene serves as a visual index of functional, open-source engineering designed to dismantle our modern throw-away culture. The artwork integrates several core circular principles:
Closed-Loop Waste: A compost toilet system where humanure is safely treated and recycled as vital fertilizer for the local crops.
Thermal Efficiency: A high-efficiency rocket stove offers an easy, low-emission way to cook and bake without relying on an electrical grid.
Hydrological Awareness: Rainwater catchment systems are standard infrastructure, reflecting a deep societal respect for water as a precious, finite resource.
Regenerative Architecture: Structures are built using local, natural materials like pressed adobe blocks and reed thatch. Passive climate control is achieved biologically, using climbing ivy and wall vegetation for natural insulation and cooling.
Upcycled Materiality: Communal furniture, such as the large central table, is entirely repurposed and up-cycled from salvaged materials.
Micro-Agroecology: Every household actively contributes to the local food chain, utilizing space-efficient raised bed herb gardens to ensure hyper-local food security.
