Biomimetic Floating City Study

This artwork represents an uncompromising leap into the absolute limits of Solarpunk architectural design. If a sustainable future requires us to draw inspiration from the natural world, this study goes all the way, synthesizing structural principles from a diverse array of ingeniously engineered organisms: the structural ribbing of Victoria amazonicawater lilies, the fluid geometries of sea shells, the flexible anchoring of sea pens, and the dense, stabilizing and desalinating networks of mangrove roots.

Combined, these biological systems form the foundation for a series of fantastical, floating superstructures.

The artwork simultaneously explores the long-held utopian dream of seasteading constructing permanent, self-sustaining human communities on our oceans. As rising sea levels redefine our global geography, this study suggests that instead of fighting the tides with concrete walls, we ought to look at how nature itself successfully conquered the water, building an amphibious urbanism that exists in harmony with marine ecosystems.
